A fuzzy logic based controller to control the wheel slip for electric vehicle antilock braking system is presented. The test facility comprised of an induction machine load operating in the generating region. The test facility was used to simulate a variety of tire/road μ-σ driving conditions, eliminating the initial requirement for skid-pan trials when developing algorithms.     Application of Fuzzy control algorithms for electric vehicle antilock braking/traction control systems

    Abstract—The application of fuzzy-based control strategies has recently gained enormous recognition as an approach for the rapid development of effective controllers for nonlinear time-variant systems. This paper describes the preliminary research and implementation of a fuzzy logic based controller to control the wheel slip for electric vehicle antilock braking systems (ABSs). As the dynamics of the braking systems are highly nonlinear and time variant, fuzzy control offers potential as an important tool for development of robust traction control. Simulation studies are employed to derive an initial rule base that is then tested on an experimental test facility representing the dynamics of a braking system. The test facility is composed of an induction machine load operating in the generating region. It is shown that the torque-slip characteristics of an induction motor provides a convenient platform for simulating a variety of tire/road - driving conditions, negating the initial requirement for skid-pan trials when developing algorithms. The fuzzy membership functions were subsequently refined by analysis of the data acquired from the test facility while simulating operation at a high coefficient of friction. The robustness of the fuzzy-logic slip regulator is further tested by applying the resulting controller over a wide range of operating conditions. The results indicate that ABS/traction control may substantially improve longitudinal performance and offer significant potential for optimal control of driven wheels, especially under icy conditions where classical ABS/traction control schemes are constrained to operate very conservatively

    Household-level risk factors for secondary influenza-like illness in a rural area of Bangladesh

These permissions are granted for the duration of the World Health Organization (WHO) declaration of COVID-19 as a global pandemic.Objective To describe household‐level risk factors for secondary influenza‐like illness (ILI), an important public health concern in the low‐income population of Bangladesh. Methods Secondary analysis of control participants in a randomised controlled trial evaluating the effect of handwashing to prevent household ILI transmission. We recruited index‐case patients with ILI – fever (<5 years); fever, cough or sore throat (≥5 years) – from health facilities, collected information on household factors and conducted syndromic surveillance among household contacts for 10 days after resolution of index‐case patients’ symptoms. We evaluated the associations between household factors at baseline and secondary ILI among household contacts using negative binomial regression, accounting for clustering by household. Results Our sample was 1491 household contacts of 184 index‐case patients. Seventy‐one percentage reported that smoking occurred in their home, 27% shared a latrine with one other household and 36% shared a latrine with >1 other household. A total of 114 household contacts (7.6%) had symptoms of ILI during follow‐up. Smoking in the home (RRadj 1.9, 95% CI: 1.2, 3.0) and sharing a latrine with one household (RRadj 2.1, 95% CI: 1.2, 3.6) or >1 household (RRadj 3.1, 95% CI: 1.8–5.2) were independently associated with increased risk of secondary ILI. Conclusion Tobacco use in homes could increase respiratory illness in Bangladesh. The mechanism between use of shared latrines and household ILI transmission is not clear. It is possible that respiratory pathogens could be transmitted through faecal contact or contaminated fomites in shared latrines

    An assessment of climate change impacts on the tropical forests of Central America using the Holdridge Life Zone (HLZ) land classification system

    Ecological models have predicted shifts in forest biomes, yet there have been very few studies that have looked at the implications on carbon stocks due to these shifts. Carbon is closely correlated to biomass and constitutes an important characteristic of the forest ecosystem. It has implications for conservation and land use practices, especially for climate change mitigation strategies currently under discussion, such as REDD+. This study couples the Holdridge Life Zone (HLZ) classification with the ECHAM5 model, to evaluate the impacts of climate change using the Special Report on Emissions Scenarios (SRES) A2, A1B and B1 for the Central American region. We utilize methodologies which combine biophysical variables with model output to assess the impacts on carbon stocks for two time periods, 2000 and 2100, . Results show that overall, the tropical category of the HLZ classification gains area as a result of one type of HLZ shifting to another forest type. In many cases the shifts result in some categories of HLZ being lost in their entirety. Elevation-associated life zones are particularly vulnerable to future climatic changes. A strong point of our approach is that differences between disaggregate regional and aggregate country levels can be compared. We suggest that a critical focus of conservation and management efforts should be concentrated on where vulnerable biomes are at most risk (biomes that shift and/or reduce fall under the vulnerable category)

    Exploring views on satisfaction with life in young children with chronic illness: an innovative approach to the collection of self-report data from children under 11

    The objective of this study was to explore young children’s views on the impact of chronic illness on their life in order to inform future development of a patient-based self-report health outcome measure. We describe an approach to facilitating self-report views from young children with chronic illness. A board game was designed in order to obtain qualitative data from 39 children with a range of chronic illness conditions and 38 healthy controls ranging in age from 3 to 11 years. The format was effective in engaging young children in a self-report process of determining satisfaction with life and identified nine domains. The board game enabled children aged 5–11 years with chronic illness to describe the effects of living with illness on home, family, friends, school and life in general. It generated direct, non-interpreted material from children who, because of their age, may have been considered unable or limited their ability to discuss and describe how they feel. Obtaining this information for children aged 4 and under continues to be a challenge

    Changing species distribution and antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of Shigella over a 29-year period (1980-2008)

    We studied changes in species distribution and antimicrobial resistance patterns of Shigella during 1980-2008, using the Diarrhoeal Diseases Surveillance system of Dhaka Hospital of ICDDR,B. In hospitalized patients Shigella prevalence decreased steadily from 8-12% in the 1980s to 3% in 2008. Endemic S. flexneri was the most commonly isolated species (54%). Epidemic S. dysenteriae type 1 had two peaks in 1984 and 1993, but was not found after 2000, except for one case in 2004. The therapeutic options are now limited: in 2008 a total of 33% of S. flexneri were resistant to ciprofloxacin and 57% to mecillinam. In the <5 years age group, severely underweight, wasted and stunted children were more at risk of shigellosis compared to well-nourished children (P<0·001). Although hospitalization for Shigella diarrhoea is decreasing, the high levels of antimicrobial resistance and increased susceptibility of malnourished children continue to pose an ongoing ris

    Immune-driven adaptation of hepatitis B virus genotype D involves preferential alteration in B-cell epitopes and replicative attenuation—an insight from human immunodeficiency virus/hepatitis B virus coinfection

    AbstractAn important driving force behind the sequence diversity of hepatitis B virus (HBV) is viral adaptation to host immune responses. To gain an insight into the impact of host immunity on genetic diversification and properties of HBV, we characterized HBV of genotype D from treatment-naive hepatitis B e antigen-positive (EP) and hepatitis B e antigen-negative (EN) patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB), where HBV is under stronger immune pressure, with that of HBV derived from human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/HBV-coinfected individuals, where HIV infection has significantly weakened the immune system. Full-length sequence analysis showed that HBV heterogeneity was most extensive in EN-CHB followed by EP-CHB and HIV/HBV coinfection. The relative magnitude of non-synonymous changes within B-cell epitopes was greater than that in T-cell epitopes of HBV open reading frames (ORFs) in both EP-CHB and EN-CHB. Nine amino acid substitutions were identified in B-cell epitopes and one in a T-cell epitope of HBV in EN-CHB, most of which resulted in altered hydrophobicities, as determined using the Kyte and Doolittle method, relative to wild-type residues found in HBV from the HIV-positive group. Additionally, 19 substitutions occurred at significantly higher frequencies in non-epitope regions of HBV ORF-P in EN-CHB than HIV/HBV-coinfected patients. In vitro replication assay demonstrated that the substitutions, particularly in reverse transcriptase and RNaseH domains of ORF-P, resulted in a decline in replication capacity of HBV. Hence, our results indicate that HBV adapts to increasing immune pressure through preferential mutations in B-cell epitopes and by replicative attenuation. The viral epitopes linked to immune response identified in this study bear important implications for future HBV vaccine studies

    Evaluation of Acquisition Modes for Semi-Quantitative Analysis by Targeted and Untargeted Mass Spectrometry

    RATIONALE: Analyte quantitation by mass spectrometry underpins a diverse range of scientific endeavors. The fast growing field of mass spectrometer development has resulted in several targeted and untargeted acquisition modes suitable for these applications. By characterizing the acquisition methods available on an ion mobility (IM) enabled orthogonal acceleration time-of-flight (oa-ToF) instrument, the optimum modes for analyte semi-quantitation can be deduced. METHODS: Serial dilutions of commercial metabolite, peptide, or crosslinked peptide analytes were prepared in matrices of human urine or E. coli digest. Each analyte dilution was introduced into an IM separation enabled oa-ToF mass spectrometer by reversed phase liquid chromatography and electrospray ionization. Data were acquired for each sample in duplicate using nine different acquisition modes, including four IM enabled acquisitions modes, available on the mass spectrometer. RESULTS: Five (metabolite) or seven (peptide/crosslinked peptide) point calibration curves were prepared for analytes across each of the acquisition modes. A non-linear response was observed at high concentrations for some modes, attributed to saturation effects. Two correction methods, one MS1 isotope-correction and one MS2 ion intensity-correction, were applied to address this observation, resulting in an up to two-fold increase in dynamic range. By averaging the semi-quantitative results across analyte classes, two parameters, linear dynamic range (LDR) and lower limit of quantitation (LLOQ), were determined to evaluate each mode. CONCLUSION: Comparison of the acquisition modes revealed that data independent acquisition and parallel reaction monitoring methods are most robust for semi-quantitation when considering achievable LDR and LLOQ. IM enabled modes exhibited sensitivity increases, but a simultaneous reduction in dynamic range which required correction methods to recover. These findings will assist users in identifying the optimum acquisition mode for their analyte quantitation needs, supporting a diverse range of applications and providing guidance for future acquisition mode developments

    Reduced-rank technique for joint channel estimation in TD-SCDMA systems.

    In time division-synchronous code division multiple access systems, the channel estimation for multiple subscribers requires the computation of very complicated algorithms through short training sequences. This situation causes mismodeling of the actual channels and introduces significant errors in the detected data of multiple users. This paper presents a novel channel estimation method with low complexity, which relies on reducing the rank order of the total channel matrix H. We exploit the rank deficient of H to reduce the number of parameters that characterizes this matrix. The adopted reduced rank technique is based on singular value decomposition algorithm. Equations for reduced rank-joint channel estimation (JCE) are derived and compared against traditional full rank-joint channel estimators: least square (LS) or Steiner, enhanced LS, and minimum mean square error algorithms. Simulation results of the normalized mean square error for the above mentioned estimators showed the superiority of reduced rank estimators. Multi-user joint data detectors based linear equalizers are used to suppress inter-symbol interference and mitigate intra-cell multiple access interference. The detectors: zero forcing block linear equalizer and minimum mean square error block linear equalizer algorithms are considered in this paper to recover the data. The results of bit error rate simulation have shown that reduced rank-JCE based detectors have an improvement by 5 dB lower than other traditional full rank-JCE based detectors
